The Fantasticast Episode 159

Prince Philip: Iron Man

Hello, and welcome to episode 159 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

It’s our last episode of 2015. We could have closed out this year with a nice, simple standalone comic. We could have, but we didn’t. Instead, we decided to look at the middle part of a three-part Marvel Team-Up story. Spider-Man is caught in a temporal battle between Kang The Conqueror and Zarrko The Tomorrow Man, and only Johnny Storm can help save the day. Gerry Conway, Jim Mooney and Frank Giacoia bring us an issue packed full of time-travel, literal time-bombs, and surprisingly easy international air travel.

We’re also paying tribute to our dear friend, podcast and former co-host Shawn Engel, who passed away this past week. Shawn was a huge supporter of the show, and he joined us for episode 31, three years ago. Messages can be left here, and the family have asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice. Shawn, you were one of the best of us, and we miss you very much.

The Waffles Are An Untruth

Hello, and welcome to episode 146 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week sees us dip our toes back into the murky waters of Marvel Team-Up, as the Human Torch once again teams up with Spider-Man, this time to take on the Living Vampire himself, Morbius.

Joining us for this team-up is UK Podcast Award nominee Stacey Taylor, of Stacey’s Pop Culture Parlour and Podcast In A Half-Shell. Together, we name Timothy Spall as the quintessential brummie, out-index the Marvel Index, indulge in some over-ACT-ing, encounter a muffled Spider-Man, get drunk on cheese, and ponder just what exactly an enzyme vampire actually is.

You can find Stacey’s Pop Culture Parlour here, and the Podcast In A Half-Shell hereStacey’s 24 Hour Podcast begins here. You can also find the Parlour on twitter here, and Stacey’s personal twitter is here.

The Great Galactus Bake-Off

Hello, and welcome to episode 144 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

And lo, there shall be an ending, of a sort. With Galactus poised to eat the entire planet, it’s up to Reed to do the equivalent of reading the small-print, before bragging to the entire planet. Well, when you’ve got the equivalent of a brain the size of a planet, you might as well let everyone know! Fantastic Four #123, Stan Lee’s antepenultimate issue of the Fantastic Four, is our issue for this episode.

However, it’s not our only issue. We have a very brief peak at Captain Ameria and Falcon #150, before taking a more leisurely browse through The Incredible Hulk #152, featuring the prelude to the Trial of the Incredible Hulk. All this, and a detailed look at career paths in the US Army of the Marvel Universe, and the discovery of Galactus’s PIN. And featuring Richard M. Nixon as himself!

The Fantasticast Episode 130: Fantastic Four #114 – But Who Shall Stop The Over-Mind?

The Fantasticast Episode 130 (300)

Under-Mind, Over-Mind, Wombling Free

Hello, and welcome to episode 130 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week, Steve and Andy are sitting down to take a detailed look at Fantastic Four #114, featuring continuity, the Over-Mind, an angry dog, the return of Agatha’s resting cloud-face, and awkwardly-timed flashbacks. We’re also casting our eye over Avengers #92, where The Thing proves himself a totally credible witness for the defence.

As well as this, we’re puzzling over the pagination, finding out what happens when Midnight Cowboy meets a Fourth World rip-off, laughing at lacklustre Yancy Street pranks, discovering the unlikely location of the secret of perpetual motion, and counting the notches on the one bedpost in the Marvel Universe you don’t ever want to count notches on!

The Fantasticast Episode 111: Fantastic Four #97 – The Monster From The Lost Lagoon

In The Kingdom Of The Mute, The Phlegmatic Man Is King

Hello, and welcome to episode 111 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

It’s the final episode of 2014, and taking advantage of the wintery season, Steve and Andy are taking a look at Fantastic Four #97, featuring a summer holiday, a trip to a marine mammal park, and a magical, size-changing submarine. Sensible plotting has been put on hold, as the motivations (and, indeed, the vocal properties) of the antagonist seem to change from page to page.

As an extra seasonal treat, we’re also taking a look at Silver Surfer #15, featuring a pitched battle between the Surfer and the Human Torch. Just like the Surfer’s own series, we also get a bit philosophical, looking at the flaws and failings of Stan Lee’s most personal superhero series.

The Fantasticast Episode 110: Fantastic Four #96 – The Mad Thinker And His Androids Of Death

The Fantasticast Episode 110 (300)Lurgi Strikes Britain. Well, Manchester…

Hello, and welcome to episode 110 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four.

This week on the show, Andy’s been hit with a terrible cold, and it sort of shows… However, this doesn’t stop him from teaming up once more with Steve and tackling the final Lee/Kirby Mad Thinker story. Can a good Mad Thinker issue be produced in the dying days of the run? And is it mere coincidence that Steve has been watching lots of Battlestar Galactica in the lead-up to recording this episode?

The Fantasticast Episode 107: Fantastic Four #93 – At The Mercy Of Torgo

Yet Another Piece Of The Action, See?

Hello, and welcome to episode 107 of The Fantasticast, see? Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four, see?

OK, we’ve done that joke to death. This week sees us tackle Fantastic Four #93 as the saga of The Thing’s enslavement on the gangster world with gladiatorial deathmatches comes to a close. Not necessarily a conclusion, but it certainly stops. Do the Fantastic Four have an actual role to play in the issue? Will the long-promised battle between Torgo and the Thing live up to expectations? And what happens when mobsters start arguing the finer points of the rulebook?

We’re also taking a rare side-trip into The Incredible Hulk with issue #122. Reed’s got a cure for the Hulk, and it’s the first Hulk/Thing battle in several years. Herb Trimpe’s on art, and without spoiling too much, this issue is a pleasant surprise. We also examine the contents of the Hulk’s green-skinned grab bag, which is less of a pleasant surprise.

The Fantasticast Episode 87: Fantastic Four #75 – Worlds Within Worlds

Galactuth Hath A Lithp

Poor Galactus.

Andrew Leyland and Stephen Lacey welcome you to the latest episode of The Fantasticast. We’re celebrating 75 issues of the Fantastic Four in a way that definitely doesn’t involve half an issue’s worth of plot stretched to fill an entire issue, oh no, not at all. We’re also taking a look at The Sub-Mariner #2, featuring the return of the Plant Man. Because you demanded it. Allegedly.

We’re also taking a look at the effects of microwaving comics, defending the fun of the New 52, promising to buy a Dan DiDio comic, looking forward to The Flash (obviously, this was recorded before the leak of the pilot episode), and getting disproportionately angry over the mere existence of the Sleepers.

Gene Colan Draws Galactus

We’re taking a break from our regular run-through of The Fantastic Four to take a look at  four issues of Daredevil: The Man Without Fear. Between guest-appearances and a plot featuring Doctor Doom that flows in next week’s issue of the Fantastic Four, we had a lot of Daredevil to cover, so we gave it its very own episode. It’s a veritable feast of Gene Colan artwork, with little flavourings of Mike Murdock, Foggy Nelson’s career and Karen Page’s hormones.

Joining us this week is one of our favourite guest-hosts, Daredevil blogger Christine Hanefalk. The writer of The Other Murdock Papers, and hot off of her guest-appearance in recent issues of Daredevil, we were delighted to have Christine back with us to take a look at these issues. And for a bonus, during the recording, the Netflix Daredevil casting announcement was made – look out for a special outtake containing our live reactions to the news!

The Fantasticast Episode 77: Fantastic Four Annual #5 – Divide And Conquer

KERPLUNK – Spelt K-E-R-P-L-U-N-K

It’s annual season once again at the Fantasticast. 1967 served up two annuals featuring members of the Fantastic Four, so to avoid a super-sized episode (and to save Steve’s editing muscles), we’ve split the episode into two.

First up for Andy and Steve is Fantastic Four Annual #5. This issue features guest-appearances from almost every friendly face featured in the series (but no Wyatt Wingfoot or Willie Lumpkin). There’s also a three-page slice of insanity, pumped straight from the brain of Jack Kirby, and the first ever solo Silver Surfer story.

We also find time to return to our listener feedback, something we haven’t done in a while. If you’ve written in to us but haven’t heard your e-mail on the air, don’t worry – it’s coming!
